In the last review, I took at closer look at the popular pre workout supplement named The Curse from CobraLabs. Before that, I shared a complete review on the popular pre workout supplement Assault from MusclePharm, and before that I shared some thoughts on the popular but now banned substanced called AMP Citrate. Now it’s times for another quick pre workout supplement review.
Are you still looking for a good pre-workout that will give you the strength and mental focus you need in the gym? ION Pre Workout, a multi-phase pre-workout supplement from Performix, has been designed so you get more from each and every workout. But does it really work? Here’s a review of the pre-workout product, with a focus on the supplement facts.
ION Pre Workout – Performix
ION is a pre-workout supplement created by Performix. The product was launched at the beginning of 2015, so hasn’t been around for very long. However, there are a lot of buzz about this supplement, so I decided to take a closer look. Let’s start out be taking a look at the claims about ION, listed by Performix. Here goes…
Claims: ION – Performix
Performix claims that ION provides enhanced mental focus, increased muscle pump and a 2nd wave of energy during your workout. On first glance of the ingredient label, we notice that there’s 175 mg of caffeine in each scoop, so taking two scoops shouldn’t be a problem if you have a good tolerance to this stimulant. The proprietary blend is 3714 mg per scoop, which isn’t a whole lot when compared to other products. But that won’t hold us back. from digging deeper.
PERFORMIX ION embodies the PERFORMIX promise. ION uses the most advanced Multi-Phase Bead nutrient delivery system, precision engineered with ballistic Terra Intelligent Beads to disperse hard hitting ingredients in stages throughout your workout. Unlike any other pre-workout, ION releases a 2nd wave during your workout with a flood of additional anti-catabolic and metabolic energy stimulants to push you through. This innovative multi-phase system is designed to get you started, keep you going and finish strong when all others fail.†^

Supplement Facts listed on ION
One serving of ION (1 scoop is 5.2 grams) contains 0 calories. The product includes the 3,714mg proprietary blend ION Preworkout Complex, which consists the following substances:
Citrulline Malate 2:1
Advantra Z® Bitter Orange (Citrus aurantium) Extract (fruit)[supplying Synephrine, N-Methyltyramine, Hordenine, Tyramine, and Octopamine]
Bioperine® Black Pepper (Piper nigrum) Extract (fruit)[std. to 95% Piperine]
Rauwolscine (Rauvolfia canescens) Extract (bark) [std. to 90% Alpha Yohimbine HCl]
In addition to this, we have, as mentioned above, 175mg caffeine. There is also 30mg Niacin for some good tingling, 500mcg Vitamin B12 and 72mg calcium.
Unfortunately, there are no details on the exact measurements of each ingredient that makes up the blend, and because the weight of each scoop is relatively low, many of the ingredients might be in small quantities. Nevertheless, let’s take a closer look at substances used here.
Carnosyn® Beta-Alanine: Beta Alaine is a non-essential beta-amino acid and allegedly helps to raise the body´s carnosine level and as a result of this your performance output and with no serious side-effects.
Citrulline Malate 2:1 As mentioned before here on muscles.zone, Citrulline Malate is a proven energy booster and a substance I welcome in my pre-workout supplements. It’s a precursor to the amino acid Arginine that has been shown to work effectively as a performance enhancer. By increasing ATP production during workouts, subjects who have tried this substance were able to perform significantly more reps, and with less muscle soreness as well.
Betaine Anhydrous: This is an amino acid (which is also known as Trimethylglycine) that has been fairly well studied and shown to help enhance strength, power and musclemass through boosting your muscle protein synthesis, as well as promoting fat loss. Most studies showing benefit from a performance enhancing perspective is with individuals using around 2.5 grams daily. We dont know how much Betaine we get from ION, but probably less than the recommended dose as the prop. blend only get’s to a total of 3.7 grams.
Creatine HCl: This is one of the many new creatine monohydrate alternatives, and this is without a doubt, one of the more popular ones. Creatine HCL is a more soluble form compared to creatine monohydrate and is typically promoted as being more effecient than monohydrate, giving less bloat, less upset stomech, better absorption, etc. I am working on a post comparing all the different types of creatine, where I, amongst others, will be taking a closer look at creatine HCL, so stay tuned for that. For now I can honestly say that I think this might be one of the better creatine options out there, but the dosage here is questionable.
Advantra Z Extract: Advantra Z Extract is a trademarked bitter orange extract known to have thermogenic properties and can promote fat loss. This is a commonly used substance in pre workout supplements and fat burners.
… Clinical efficacy studies have found that bitter orange and multi-ingredient supplements containing bitter orange produce an increase in resting metabolic rate and are effective in inducing weight loss and reducing body fat more than diet and exercise alone – without causing adverse effects. Analyses of bitter orange’s safety have shown that this ingredient has no effect on blood pressure or heart rate and is unequivocally safe for human consumption….
N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine:Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that acts as a precursor to Dopamine and Noradrenaline. Recently we have seen more and more supplements using N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine instead of just L-Tyrosine. N-Acetyl-Tyrosine is Tyrosine with acetic acid which allows for better absorption. This substance has gained tremendous popularity in recent years, specially in the nootropic environment as its known to improve mental energy, alterness, learning capacity and general comprehension. But its also starting to show in more and more fitness and bodybuilding supplements. A typical recommended dose of N-Acetyl-Tyrosine is around 300 – 500 mg. and it in general considered to be safe when kept within these limits. There is however, a lack of scientific studies on this stuff.
BioPerine®: This is an extract of black pepper. Bioperine can boost your metabolism and it should improve absorption of nutrients significantly. This is a common substance in pre workout supplements.
Rauwolscine Extract: Extracted for alpha yohimbine which is chemically similar in structure to Yohimbine. In short, this ingredient can speed up fat loss alongside the other stimulants that are found in Ion (such as caffeine).

Ratings on ION
Ion currently holds a rating of 8.8 out of 10 on Bodybuilding.com, and a rating of 8.7 out of 10 on SupplementReviews.com, where the product ranks fifth in a list of pre-workout supplements.
Verdict – ION Performix
As I haven’t consumed Ion multi-phase pre-workout, I am basing this review on the ingredients found in the product. The problem here is not the ingredients (although they are pretty much standard when it comes to pre-workout products), but that the quantities of each aren’t listed on the contents, making it difficult to gauge whether this is an effective product. However, the reviews of Ion have been excellent, and the inclusion of L-Tyrosine and Rauwolscine can be effective when it comes to fat loss and enhancing concentration during training.
