I recently came across this per-workout from Big J over a TigerFitness and decided to post my thoughts on it. Here goes. Big J is the guy behind the website bigjsextremefitness. He is also the founder of Big J’s Extreme Fitness;
Established in 1994, Big J’s Extreme Fitness is a true HARDCORE facility: a place where the plates are made of iron, chalk fills the air, and INTENSITY is encouraged.
On the website we can see that they currently offer two supplements; a pre-workout and an intra-workout. In this post I will take a closer look at the pre-workout:

Before we get to the details of the supplement facts, let’s see what Big J has to say about his pre-workout formula. here goes:

It is nice to see that everything here is fully disclosed with no prop. blends. Now let’s take a closer look at exactly what this stuff is.
Ahh the good ol’e taurine . You will find it in almost every single energy drink on the market, and yet few people tend to know what it does. Taurine is actually an amino acid – a conditionally essential amino acid meaning that it’s synthesis can be limited under special pathophysiological conditions.
It acts as a cell hydration agent by pulling water into the cells. In addition to hydration, this also gives the user what some will consider a benefit – a water-based pump. Opinions on this matter are very shattered. Some likes it while others don’t. It’s kind of the creatine bloat talk all over again. Finally, it has been shown to enhance endurance, focus and reduce soreness.
The good old caffeine and at a perfect dosage. We all know what this stuff does, but just in case you have been you have been living under a rock, here is the short version: It will give you a physical and mental energy boost. The typical dosage tends to be closer to 200 mg and that is my personal sweet spot. Here we get a total of 180 mg which seems like a perfect choice, considering we get a bunch of other substances to boost energy levels as well.
Caffeine boosts energy in different ways. First of all it does this by boosting the effects of serotonin, acetylcholine and dopamine. It also blocks adenosine receptors and increase the release of catecholamines.All in all this allows your body to send more blood to your muscles, release sugar for energy and make your heart beat faster.
Theobromine is a substance found in a number of natural substances, including cocoa. It’s similar to caffeine, although it is weaker. It has a stronger effect on the heart, though. It boosts endurance and supports recovery. Scientists now think that it is responsible for the aphrodisiac effects of chocolate.
Infinergy™ Dicaffeine Malate
Dicaffeine Malate is a combination of caffeine and malic acid and is trademarked by Creative Compounds LLC under the name of Inginergy. It is becoming a fairly common ingredient in pre-workout supplements. It is said to allow for easier digestion while also replenishing the energy produced by caffeine, which helps to minimise the well-known post-caffeine energy crash.
We have seen this beta-2 agonist used in several other supplements recently; specially in pre-workout supplements and fat burners. N-Methyltyramine has been shown to give a small boost in adrenaline production. Some people in the supplement space compare the effects from N-Methyltyramine to that of DMAA – Patrick Arnold disagrees.
We are seeing hordenine in more and more pre-workout supplements and for a good reason. Although there aren’t that many studies done on this stuff just yet, it is known to amplify and prolong the effects we get from caffeine. Hordenine, contained in Citrus Aurantium, acts as a beta-2 adrenergic and a Monoamine Reuptake Inhibitor. As a Monoamine Reuptake Inhibitor hordenine will amplify the effects from stimulants by blocking the reuptake of Noradrenaline.

Another “weak Ephedrine”, or at least with mechanisms similar to that of ephedrine. It has been shown to be an effective beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic agonist, but with limited studies to back this up. User experiences often seem to highlight that Higenamine does have stimulating and energy boosting properties and often categorize the effect as in between Synephrine and Ephedrine.
Verdict on BIG J’S INTENSITY Pre-WorkoutT
here are some solid substances used in Big J’s pre-workout supplement, proven to boost energy which is what this PWO will do to you; boost energy. It is also nice to see everything disclosed in details, with no hiding behind prop. blends. With that being said, I think the caffeine amounts used in intensity is a bit too much, in my opinion. In addition to this, I would have preferred to see some pump amplifying substances as well.
This is a solid PWO, for those of you who have a high caffeine tolerance, and new a good energy boost before hitting the gym (while caring less for pumps).
