I have shared my thoughts on the new C4 4th Generation from Cellucor here.
I also compared the C4 to the stronger pre workout supplement from Cellucor C4 50X: C4 4th Generation Vs. C4 50X.
With the recently added C4 4th Generation line, Cellucor also released a C4 Ripped version, which, as the name indicates, is supposed to have fat burning properties. So with the recent comparison of C4 vs. C4 50X, I plan to continue this journey, this time comparing the two against the new C4 Ripped. Here goes:
First of all, as you can see from the table below, C4 Ripped contains exactly the same dosages as C4 4th generation on all substances (with the exception of Calcium where C4 Ripped has 2mg more than C4 and there is no creatine nitrate in the Ripped version).
|#||C4 Ripped||Dosage||C4 4th Gen.||Dosage||C4 50X||Dosage|
|1||Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid)||250mg||Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid)||250mg||Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid)||375mg|

|10||Arginine AKG||1g||Arginine AKG||1g||Arginine AKG||1.5g|
The only difference of C4 Ripped is the addition of the C4 Ripped Blend which is a 1 gram prop. blend of the following substances:
L-Carnitine TartrateGreen Coffee Bean ExtractCapsimaxColeus Forskohlii
Keep in mind that substances are listed in descending order of predominance according to weight. The ripped blend has a total weight of 1 gram. We won’t know how much of what we get, but we know we get most L-Carnitine Tartrate, of all the substances used in the blend. Now for L-Carnitine Tartrate, there is a good article over at bodybuilding.com, highlighting several benefits as a result of supplementation with this substance, such as improved fat oxidation and muscle recovery time – it is however, based on a daily supplementation with 2 grams. C4 Ripped clearly contains less than half of that, so the question is how much the dosage is, and which kind of benefit you can expect from it.
Next on the list is green coffee bean extract. This is a very common ingredient in fat burners, as Chlorogenic Acid is believed to reduce glucose absorption. Again, we don’t know what dosage we get here, and based on a quick look at historical studies on this stuff, 500mg seems to be the level where individuals had beneficial results, where less than this did close to nothing. So yeah…
Capsimax is Cellucor’s name for Capsaicin which is found in spicy food, and has been thoroughly studied. It increases fat oxidation, but we probably need around 100 – 200 mg of it, before its likely to have any significant effect. Whether you get this from a serving of C4 Ripped or not, remains a Cellucor secret.
Coleus Forskohlii is the final substance is the Ripped Blend, and because of this, it is the substance with the lowest dosage of the four substances in the mix. Coleus Forskohlii contains the active compound, Forskolin which supposedly increases cAMP and this has been shown to increase fat metabolism.
Overall, I feel a bit ambivalent about C4 Ripped. Its a mix of a fat burner and a PWO, but more of a PWO than a fat burner, in my opinion. I perfer to keep things saperated and take a scoop of my PWO when I am about to hit the gym, and save fat burnes for fat burning times. Mixing them up makes it difficult to find a good balance. We all know its difficult to gain muscle mass and burn fat at the same time – but a PWO can naturally be a good choice to optimize for a cardio session, and help speed up the fat burning process. But the ingridients used in C4 Ripped to make it a fat burner are a bit on the light side, and most importantely is that we dont know the dosage we get.
I would perfer to go for C4 4th generation of C4 50X and use it as a Pre workout supplement, and look for another supplement if you are looking to drop weight.
