Evlution Nutrition ENGN Pre-Workout: Reviewed

[content-egg module=Amazon template=custom/compact]
Evlution Nutrition ENGN is a pre-workout supplement manufactured and marketed by the company EVLUTION NUTRITION (also known as EVLUTION SPORTS). While it does not offer anything we have not seen in the past (the formulation is a pretty threadbare mix of well known and safe stimulants like caffeine and beta alanine) some substances in EVLUTION NUTRITION’s own ‘Mind-to-Muscle’ proprietary blend of stimulants is worth some second look. Perhaps as a marketing overture, the stimulant also includes a fair amount of vitamins as well as strength and endurance elements in its overall formulation.

EVLUTION NUTRITION claim their ENGN pre-workout supplement supports cognitive function, boosts mood and blood flow to the brain exponentially for alertness during physical training. This is ostensibly because of two key ingredients of their Mind-to-Muscle proprietary blend: Pikatropin and Huperzine A. Other elements of this blend including Infinergy and choline bitartrate are supposed to give you explosive power to go through your workouts with the highest intensity.

Supplement Facts
Each serving of the ENGN pre-workout supplement contains the following:

– 47 mg of Niacin as Niacinamide

-2.7 mg of Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCI)

– 1.1 mcg of folic acid

– 33 mcg of vitamin B12 as cyanocobalamin

– 80 mg of magnesium (formulated as Creatine Magnapower’s magnesium creatine chelate)

The pre-workout supplement also contains 7.73 grams of ENGN’s proprietary blended Mind-to-Muscle matrix comprising of Pikatropin (picamilon), Huperzine A (Club Moss or Huperzia serrata extract), Beta alanine, Betaine anhydrous, Creatine monohydrate, L-Tyrosine, Agmatine sulfate (in the form of AgmaPure ™), Caffeine anhydrous, Infinergy ™ (DiCaffeine Malate), Alpha-Glycerolphosphorylcholine, and Choline Bitartrate.

Substances like caffeine, beta alanine, agmatine and choline as well as the vitamins listed are fairly common in formulation of other supplements and they are all safe to use provided they are taken in the right dosage.

Pikatropin, also known as Pikamilon, is a cognitive enhancer derived from niacin and GABA. It reduces fatigue by stimulating greater blood flow to the brain. Pikatropin has been proven not only to have an effect on the brain’s cognitive and analytical functions but also as significantly improving reaction times and eye to hand coordination.

Huperzine A is a substance obtained from a plant known as Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata). It is known for boosting mental alertness and energy. While there are side effects associated with Huperzine A use such as hyperactivity, dizziness and insomnia, the amount included in EVL ENGN’s Mind-to-Muscle matrix is likely to be so minute as to make any safety concerns unnecessary.

Dicaffeine Malate (sold as Infinergy ™) is an alternative stimulant to caffeine and is a common ingredient in colas. It is a combination of natural caffeine and malic acid. The two compounds are ionically bonded to form a stimulant that increases mental focus on top of stimulating thermogenesis and optimizing energy. It is not only much more effective than caffeine but is also easier on the stomach as malic acid boosts digestion. On the flipside though, Dicaffeine malate may induce similar side effects to caffeine including jitters, headaches, insomnia and increased heart rate.

Alpha Glycerylphosphorylcholine or simply alpha-GPC is a choline based compound that has several promising properties in the treatment and management of some conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. While more extensive studies are needed to prove alpha-GPC’s effectiveness, some preliminary clinical studies have shown it has some cognitive boosting properties and also enhances power output in athletes.

L-Tyrosine (or acetyl-L-Tyrosine), is one of the 22 amino acids used by the body to synthesize proteins. The amino acid has many medical uses including in the treatment of a genetic condition known as phenylketonuria (PKU) as well as depression and ADHD. Its inclusion in this stimulant is however owing to its ability to improve mental alertness.

Flavors, Jar Sizes and Price per Serving
The EVLUTION NUTRITION ENGN pre-workout stimulant is sold in one standard 30 servings jar size. However, the supplement can be ordered in 3 or 5 servings variety packs. You have a choice of six different flavors from Blue Raz, Fruit Punch to Furious Grape (exclusive), Green Apple, Orange Dream and Watermellon. The 30 servings pack sells for $29.99, amounting to $1 per servings value.

EVLUTION NUTRITION ENGN is one of the top rated pre-workout stimulants on BodyBuilding.com with an average rating of 9.1 out of 10. However, on SupplementReviews.com, its performance is somewhat more lackluster as its average rating is a mere 7.4 out of 10, ranking at #115 out of a total of 159 reviewed pre-workout stimulants. It is not a particularly glossy performance considering that only 28% of other products are ranked below it. The likely cause of this is that many users feel that for a pre-workout stimulant with such common fare in the way of ingredients, a $1 per serving price tag is unjustifiable.

The EVLUTION NUTRITION ENGN pre-workout stimulant is a pretty effective supplement offering a perceptible mental and muscular energy boost necessary for intensive workouts. It comes with the usual mental stimulants and a very interesting proprietary blend of ingredients. It is hard to conclude just how effective this ‘Mind-to-Muscle’ matrix is but I for one do not like proprietary blend supplements as a rule. If you are a high performance athlete you need to know the exact proportions of the substances you are taking. Including proprietary blends in a formulation only adds to risky guesswork if you ask me.
