True GRIT Protein is the whey protein powder component of the True GRIT line of nutritional supplements launched by BodyBuilding.com in January of 2015. Since the launch, True GRIT has caused plenty of excitement in fitness forums though whether most of this buzz comes from the prominence of its manufacturer or the intrinsic value in the products remains to be seen. The protein was released in two jar sizes and limited flavors and it is to be expected that BodyBulding.com will soon revamp the product in order to give customers more choice.
As is the case with all the other products in the True GRIT line of supplements, BodyBuilding.com advance the argument that True GRIT Protein is formulated on the basis of intensive and extensive nutritional health research, claiming that the protein was the product of “some of the most impressive scientific studies ever completed in the world of sports nutrition.” But they go one better, labeling True GRIT as the most advanced fast- and slow-release protein blend in the market. Supposedly, it is precision dosed to deliver a sustained release of amino acids into the body in order to fuel growth and recovery of muscles.
A serving of True GRIT Protein (a scoop of approximately 35 grams) packs 140 calories, 20 of them derived from 2 grams of fat content. Most of this fat (1.5 grams) is saturated fat. The rest of the calories are derived from 4 grams of carbohydrates, half of which are sugars. In the same serving you also get 75 milligrams of cholesterol, which is equivalent to a quarter of recommended daily intake (assuming a 2,000 calorie diet).
The mineral content comes in trace values:
– 168 mg of calcium
– 1.4 mg of iron
– 170 mg of sodium
The bulk of the 35 gram scoop is of course the protein blend (25 grams) comprising
– 50% Micellar Whey
– Whey protein concentrate
– Whey protein isolate
– 97% whey protein hydrolsate
This formulation, while not the stroke of genius that BodyBuilding.com would have us believe it to be, is admirably balanced. Blending micellar whey and whey protein varieties allows for both quick and slow protein intake in the system.
Flavors, Jar Sizes and Price per Serving
True GRIT Protein comes in two jar sizes: 2 Lbs. and 4 Lbs. The 2 Lbs. jar produces approximately 26 servings while the larger jar will take you through 52 servings on average. The whey protein powder is available in 4 basic flavors: Chocolate Milkshake, Cookies & Cream, Strawberry Cream and Vanilla Ice Cream. True to form, True GRIT Protein is only available from BodyBuilding.com; at least for the time being. The 2 Lbs jar sells for $32.99 which equates to a price of $1.27 per serving while the 4 Lbs. jar sells for $52.99, giving you slightly better value for money at $1.02 per serving.
There is no reason, explicit or implicit, to suggest that BodyBuilding.com does play underhand in order to give their own products impressive ratings. At the time of publishing this in-depth review, True GRIT Protein had accumulated 192 customer reviews with an average rating of 9.3 stars out of 10. Admittedly, BodyBuilding.com does make some hyperbolic claims about the formulation and performance of products in their True GRIT line but which other manufacturer does not? Moreover, True GRIT Protein is not in the top 100 highest rated whey protein powders selling on BodyBuilding.com’s online store where at least a dozen products average a scarcely believable 9.9 stars out of 10. That said though, it would be great if the product was available for sale on other reputable websites in order to get a more objective measure of its popularity with the online body building community.
When all is said and done, the profile of True GRIT Protein is on the main impressive. Formulating the powder with about 6 grams of protein blend for every gram of carbohydrate is just the right mix you need for someone looking to bulk up on muscles without spoiling their lean figure. That said, the protein falls way short of expectations when it comes to providing variety in the flavors department. Perhaps BodyBuilding.com will revamp the product with more flavors as it gains more headway in the market.
