Review: Friction (VPX)

A good energy supplement doesn’t only give you a burst of energy when lifting weights, but can provide you with better mental clarity – helping you to get more out of your workouts. One of the best pre-workouts out there is Friction from VPX. In this review, we’re going to take a closer look at its benefits and the different ingredients you can expect to find.

Friction is a pre-workout supplement created by VPX. The product was launched in 2011, and has become one of the most popular pre-workouts during the last few years.

VPX claims that Friction can “increase brain horsepower”, provide you with increased energy, and increase lean muscle mass. The product contains everything you need from a pre-workout in only one scoop, including 3.25 grams of beta-alanine, and 5 grams of creatine monohydrate. Next, we’re going to examine the ingredients you can find in Friction.

One serving of Friction (1 scoop is 11.5 grams) contains 25 calories. The product includes two proprietary blends – Proprietary Creatine Matrix, and Mind Matrix. Creatine Matrix contains creatine monohydrate (one of the most researched supplements on the market, which has been found to increase endurance when performing high-intensity, short-term exercise), caffeine (400 mg), and beta-alanine (3,250 mg). Other ingredients include malic acid, citric acid, and natural and artificial flavors. Here are some other ingredients in closer detail:

Coumaoyl Dopamine: Give your brain a boost with this ingredient, which has been included to provide you with the mental clarity and focus you need during a workout. It can also boost cAMP levels via beta 2 adrenoceptors. Not much research is available regarding this ingredient, and whether it has been deemed as safe.

Isopropyloctopamine: A powerful mood enhancer that gives you the concentration you need to improve your lifts, or exceed your personal best when at the gym. Research suggests that isopropyloctopamine is synthetically-derived from octopamine, which is non-DSHEA-compliant.

B-Phenylethylamine HCI: Boosts dopamine in the brain, giving your body a ‘feel good’ feeling during a workout. Helps with concentration and mental clarity.

Halostachine HCI: A stimulant, this ingredient can give you the energy and mental focus you need during training. It also stimulates beta receptors, can increase core temperature and speed up metabolism. It has none of the side effects that are sometimes associated with beta receptor agonists, making it a safe choice for gym-goers.

Friction comes in two flavors – Exotic Fruit and Watermelon. VPX recommends that you use one level scoop and mix it with water. Unlike other pre-workouts, you will only need one scoop of the product to achieve the desired result. The list price of the product is approximately $65.00 (for 30 servings), which equates to a price of approximately $2.16 per serving – making it good value-for-money when compared with other energy supplements available on the market.

Friction currently holds a rating of 8.2 out of 10 on, where the product is rated the 5th best energy stimulant product on the website (out of a total of 30 products). The product is no longer available at

I haven’t consumed Friction from VPX, and I am therefore basing my review on the ingredients found in the product. Looking at its contents, the product contains two proprietary blends – both of which can give you the stimulation you need when in the gym. You will be able to increase blood flow, improve concentration, and have a more effective workout. The inclusion of creatine can also give you a much-needed edge when training. However, some people have suggested concerns over the inclusion of isopropyloctopamine an Coumaoyl Dopamine .
