What is the Best Tasting Protein Powder?

Back in the old days, the range was different protein powders was very limited. Almost all brands had three flavors to choose from: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. That was it. I remember trying several different ones, and they all tasted terrible.

Around 2001 and 2002, things started to change. New flavors started to hit the market, and it was obviously a hit. Bodybuilders and protein junkies had been served with the same three options for years, so when coconut, pineapple and what not started to show, people showed an immediate interest.

Since then, we have continuously seen more and more new flavors, which is a good thing. Supplement manufacturers have also changed the wording to make it sound far more appealing than before (like “Vanilla” to “Rich Creamy Vanilla”).

Best tasting protein powder?

With all these new flavor options comes a different issue. What is the best tasting protein powder? Personally, I still think that protein powder quality is more important than the flavor, simply because if the quality is lacking, whats the point of taking it? Then you might as well get a milkshake which actually does taste really good. But when quality is high, taste is the second priority in my book. Some people will argue that the price point is more important, but I disagree. Sure you might be able to save a couple of bucks here and there, but if that means you will get a protein powder that has a really bad taste to it, you might end up skipping it post workout. Thats what I have experienced in the past at least. Because of this, I prefer to spend a bit more, and get a quality protein powder which also has a good taste. In this post I actually only look at a couple of different protein powder supplements and all of them are whey protein. To be honest I think that taste tends to be more of an issue when it comes to other types of protein powder, specially that of casein protein. Because of that, the appropriate title of this post is more something like:

Best Tasting Whey Protein Powder

I have tested quite a bunch of different protein powders throughout the years, but as we constantly get new versions on the market, I have naturally only tried a fraction of what is available out there. But lets me share some thoughts on a couple of the ones I have tried, that taste really good.

Syntrax Nectar Whey Protein Isolate

I think this was one of the first alternatives to the three old standard choices (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry) I tried, and this got me hooked. One of the things I really enjoyed with it, what that it mixed perfectly with water, and really gave it this kind of lemonade fuzz, instead of the typical milkshake kind of drink. Its been years since I tried this, but still this day today, I want to grab a jar when I stumble upon this. I only tried the Caribbean cooler flavor, but it comes in a wide range of different flavors.

Elite Whey from Dymatize

This is without a doubt, my all time favorite protein powder. There are lots of different flavors and they all taste amazing. In addition to this, Elite Whey is a top notch high quality protein powder, from a company I trust. Cafe mocha is probably my favorite, but I can’t say for sure, as they all do a really good job, when it comes to taste. Mix it with milk, and you got yourself an unbeatable delicious protein shake.
You can get Elite Whey from Dymatize with the following flavors:
Butter Cream Toffee
Cafe Mocha
Chocolate Fudge
Chocolate Mint
Cinnamon Bun
Cookies & Cream
Gourmet Vanilla
Pina Colada
Rich Chocolate
Smooth Banana
Strawberry Blast

Syntha 6 from BSN

Another top notch protein powder from a company with a proven track record. Syntha 6 is a bit more expensive than the two alternatives listed above, but the quality might just be a bit higher. I wont be the judge of that, but either way, the taste is awesome! Syntha 6 is, just like Elite Whey and Syntrax Nectar, sold in many different flavors:
strawberry protein powderChocolate Cake Batter
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
Chocolate Milkshake
Chocolate Mint
Chocolate Peanut Butter
Cinnamon Bun – Exclusive!
Cookies & Cream
Peanut Butter Cookie
Strawberry Milkshake
Vanilla Ice Cream

I have tried the Strawberry milkshare and cookies & cream. They both taste very very good! If you want to know more about Syntha 6 from BSN, I have shared some more thoughts on it here. There is also a newer version released named Syntha 6 Edge, which you can read about here.

Platinum Hydro Whey from Optimum

I recently had a chance to test this and I was really surprised about just how good the taste was. Normally, you will have to mix protein powder with milk to get the best taste (in my opinion). However, Platinum Hydro Whey mixes really well with water and it still gives you this smooth and creamy kind of taste that you would expect to get from a protein powder mixed with milk. Optimum is without a doubt the kind of protein powders and weight gainers. Their supplements are extremely popular, and there is a good reason for it. The quality is second to none, and the same is true for the taste. My next jar will be a Platinum Hydro Whey from Optimum. You can get Platinum Hydro When in the following flavors:
Chocolate Mint
Cookies & Cream Overdrive
Supercharged Strawberry
Turbo Chocolate
Velocity Vanilla

What is the best tasting protein powder?

I have tested all of the above-listed protein powders, and although there are lots and lots of alternatives on the market, these are the four best protein powders in my opinion, very solid options, but in terms of quality and taste. A couple of final notes here are that, of all the different protein powders I have tested throughout the years, always, taste better when mixed with milk compared to water. The flipside to this is, that the calorie count naturally gets higher. Another thing is that protein powders that contain a bit of carbs almost always taste better than the ones very low on carbs, where the flipside again is, that you usually don’t take protein powder to get carbs. However, keep in mind that some carbs are good for the absorption(to be fair, there are a lot of mixed opinions on this, but that’s my stand at least) so you might reconsider going for very low carb protein powders. I would love to share my thoughts on more specific protein powder supplements such as the best tasting vegan protein powder or best tasting low carb protein powder, but unfortunately I havent tested any of these. I mostly stick to normal whey protein with a good reputation, so that is what will be covered here on muscles.zone.
